Steve Dobbs is standing for the position of South East rep in the Momentum National Committee elections. Steve has been an active socialist and Marxist for a decade and has the full endorsement of the Marxist World Editorial Board.

Members of Momentum will receive their online ballots as of noon Tuesday 22nd November, and voting closes at noon on Tuesday 29th November. Below is Steve’s submitted nomination statement of 200 words, followed by a 5 bullet point programme:

The global crisis of 2008 has laid bare the bankruptcy of capitalism as a social and economic system. It is the working class and poor around the world who have had to pay for the failure of the banks and multinationals to meet the needs of humanity. As a Marxist, I believe the only alternative to this dictatorship of billionaires is the democratic rule of the working class and common ownership and control of the means of production, distribution and exchange. To achieve this, we must build a mass working class movement, both in the streets and in the Labour Party.

The twice electoral victory of Jeremy Corbyn to Labour leadership shows there is support within the Labour Party and wider society for a socialistic programme. I believe our task is to further articulate and elaborate on a socialist programme and link it to the struggles and desires of workers throughout the country. The EU referendum and the election of Trump in the USA shows that now is not the time for moderation and “being realistic”, but to be bold and fight for revolutionary socialist policies in Momentum and the Labour Party that can transform society for the majority.

  • Make Labour MPs accountable to the membership – support mandatory re-selection in CLPs.
  • Turn Labour into a million strong mass working class party active in all cities and towns
  • Momentum must take an independent, revolutionary working class position - Welcome the shift to the Left in the Labour Party, without being uncritical of the leadership
  • Support militant anti-fascism. For community self-defence against racism and fascism
  • For a revolutionary workers’ government on a socialist programme:
    • End unemployment - Free education, work (re)training and guaranteed quality work for all without loss of pay under full trade union rights
    • Housing is a human right – nationalise all housing stock and bring all accommodation under democratic workers’ control
    • Expropriate the banks, assets and property of the capitalist class and rebuild society on a democratic and planned socialist basis
    • Compensation for countries that have suffered and continue to suffer under British imperialist domination
    • Support the international struggle for socialism and workers’ movement worldwide
